I'm trying to develop an embedded device that can take logs and transmit them wirelessly to my phone. Since the J2534 drivers are only available for Windows, I was looking into how the serial communication with the ECU works on Linux. My question is: what kind of cable do you need to connect the laptop to the OBDII port? Is it just a dumb cable with certain OBDII pins connected to certain serial pins, or does it need some kind of chip in between? If the former, anyone know where I can get a diagram of the pinout? I tried searching the forum but mostly I find that people are just using the Tactrix.

With Linux only serial is supported so you will need to use a Tactrix version 1.x or an inexpensive VAG-COM KLL cable.
