Hello everyone, I'm super new to this, but recently I picked up a 2006 Legacy 2.5i AT. I've been trying to dive into the ECU, more so just to learn about it and to tinker than wanting to change anything in particular. Anyways I cant seem to download the ROM from the cars ECU using either ECU Flash, or ECU Explorer. I've tried all the different definitions I can find for ECU Flash but none seem to work.

Luckily for me, for some reason the ECU Logger in RomRaider seems to work just fine. It gives me live readouts of all the engine data. From the logger I have also learned that the ECU ID is: 4512148006, but the CAL ID is listed as: Unknown.

The weirdest part is that in ECU Flash, in the lower right corner it says that its connected to the ECU with an Open Port 2.0 USB, yet it wont read the ROM from the ECU. No matter what profile I try to use for the vehicle it just says "an error has occurred" when I attempt to read the ROM from the ECU. Another bit of info that may or may not help: in desperation I tried to read the ROM with the engine running and I found that when the error occurs (just like it always does) the ECU in the car seems to shut down and the engine turns off.

The only mention I found of the ECU ID I have is here, but nothing was resolved:
https://www.subaruoutback.org/threads/l ... 522/page-6

Anyways any help you guys have would be much appreciated! I will a screenshot of what is happening in ECU Flash in case it helps.

Car info again:
2006 Subaru Legacy 2.5i AT
ECU ID: 4512148006
CAL ID: Unknown

A ECU definition has not be created yet. We would need the stock ROM.

Okay so update.... I pulled the cover off that's above the throttle and brake.

First I found this:

It was plugged in to this, there were NO OTHER connectors of that type under there.

I also found this which was taped up with a bunch of other wires going into an ecu box:

As you can see there are two open holes in the end of the plug like its supposed to shorted temporarily which is why it peaked my interest.

Going back to the plug that was slightly greenish clear, that connector was a dead short:

The other connector (with the holes and the green stripe) looks like this:

So after discovering that slightly greenish connector was already shorted (sorta like the green flash connectors) I tried reading the ecu with ECU Flash in the following scenarios:
2pin SHORTED, 8 pin NOT shorted (basically the same way I've been trying to read it)
2pin NOT shorted, 8 pin NOT shorted
2pin SHORTED 8 pin SHORTED

All of the above were tried under the "2005-2007|2005-2006 Subaru ALL DBW WRX/STi|DBW FXT/OBXT/LGT/Baja" car definition in ECU Flash. Every time I ended up getting the same error that I have been getting.

I've also tried uninstalling ECU Flash, RomRaider, and any drivers I could find. It doesnt appear to have changed anything.

Any idea what those connectors are? I thought it was interesting that the one was slightly green colored but there wasnt another connector anywhere around it. Its also interesting that it was shorted directly from Subaru.

I believe they are behind the carpet under the glove box.

....facepalm.... yep, I'm a newb at this whole suby thing.... found it and read the ROM no issues, except as mentioned above there are no definitions for it. I'll include the ROM, do I need to try to make a set of definitions? Or is that something that you developers only do? I definitely wouldn't mind learning!

Also just an add in, I am fairly certain this is the stock ROM as the vehicle was a single owner vehicle (by a middle aged lady) up until I bought it a couple weeks ago. She didnt seem the type to be into flashing the ECU on her Subaru but I suppose you never know.

I grabbed that and added it to ECUFlash. After adding that it opened the file but it doesn't have any of the parameters listed on the the left like it does when I open other ROMs that do work.

I also tried adding that to my RomRaider definitions using the definitions updater, then tried to open the ROM (saved as a .bin file) and it still says ecu definition not found.

This def for EcuFlash, not for RomRaider. Put it to "Program Files/OpenECU/EcuFlash/rommetadata/subaru/Legacy 2.5i/E2VL001B.xml"
