I am very new to this whole tuning thing and am gettting started. However I have an old obdII to usb cable sitting around and am wondering would this work. It isnt a tactrix cable but it goes from obdii to a usb port on my computer. Anyways i am wondering does the cable used have to be a tactrix?

Which year car? The late model 08+ need a Tactrix 2.0
Some of the older models can get away with a VAG OBD2 to USB plug.

2007 wrx. When I plug in the computer to the car and start romraider it says it can't establish a connection with the car and to check that the cable is connected and the ignition is on. Both of those are occurring so do I need a tactrix then.

There are different kinds of OBD2-USB cables. It sounds like yours isn't compatible.
If it says "ELM" or "ELM327" or something like that, then it's definitely not going to work.
