Does anyone know where the logic resides for this 'feature'? In the ECU or the ABS controller?

I really detest the system. I'm not a 45kg housewife and I don't need help stomping the brake pedal in an emergency. What I want is to be able to take a quick dab at the pedal without the system slamming the brakes on!

You're not talking about the vacuum assist are you?

No no, that's too easy. I am talking about whatever it is that "analyzes the force and stroke on the brake pedal and increases hydraulic boost to provide enhanced braking", in Subaru's words. That system which apparently fears the driver cannot press the brake pedal hard enough for an emergency, and adds extra hydraulic pressure to stop the car. It seems to activate when there is a rapid pedal movement over a short stroke.

I find it annoying. For example in consecutive S-bends, where speed is in a narrow range, I like to accelerate slightly through the exit of one turn but want to scrub a little speed for the entry into the next. I like to dab the brake pedal quickly but not too hard in order to weight the front tires for turn-in, without losing too much momentum. The assist system sees that short jab at the pedal as a failed attempt at an emergency stop and applies more brake torque than I wanted. There is probably a pedal force below which the system won't activate but my foot cannot consistently find this.

I am guessing the logic is in the ABS computer but hoping it's somewhere we could get at it and wring it's bloody neck.

Seems it's in the VDC system...

http://www.drive.subaru.com/Fall07_2008impreza.htm

"VDC also incorporates all-speed Traction Control – to help reduce wheelspin – Brake Assist, and Incline Start Assist."

Well, at least if you put the VDC off fuse in place it will shut this thing down along with the rest of it.
