I've tried a bunch of things, but currently stuck. Be great if someone can point me in the right direction.
RomRaider Logger works for logging. It shows CAL ID unknown, and ECU ID is 4552164206. When I try the Learning Table Values tab I get the Error "ECU definition file not found or undefined. Learning Table Values cannot be properly retrieved until an ECU definition is defined in the Editor's Definition Manager".
I tried to get ECUFlash working to pull the ROM to put up a definition request, but can't get ECUFlash working either.
Equipment: - 2005 Subaru Outback 2005 2.5i MT ADM (Australian) - Windows 10 64 bit on a laptop - Ebay VAG COM cable KKL 409.1 - When using ECUFlash car is in test mode (green connectors joined and radiator fans are switching on and off)
Background: - The VAG COM cable works fine for logs with RomRaider - I had a lot of problems with the cable drivers initially (the ones on the included CD were very old and I suspect not compatible with Windows 10). I discovered the chip was "Win Chip Head", went to their site (Chinese chip manufacturer) and got the latest drivers which then worked. When plugged in, the cable shows up in Device Manager under ports as "USB-SERIAL CH340 (COM1)". I have set the driver properties to use COM1 and 9600 bps. - I have tried ECUFlash versions 1.28, 1.31, 1.42 and 1.44. The installation handler of the three older versions would not successfully install the drivers. The 1.44 version did install the drivers, but they don't seem to being used by the cable. The 1.28, 1.31 and 1.42 versions of ECUFlash wouldn't run. The 1.44 version of ECUFlash runs ok but just says "No Vehicle Interface" in the bottom right of the window. I have selected vehicle type as the 2005-2006 DBW OBXT. When something didn't run or install I tried to run as Administrator, but that didn't seem to make any difference. - I tried to change the cable drivers using Windows "Update Driver" and by pointing Windows to the "/drivers/x86" directory under ECUFlash. Windows looks at the drivers but decides not to give me the option of using them and says "you already have the best driver"
Any suggestions on what to try next? Or is there some other software I can use to pull the ROM?
Many Thanks!

For ECUFlash, you need an Openport cable or a VAG-COM with a vary particular version of the FTDI chip in it and an old version of ECUFlash. The Openport2 cable is the best option.

Thanks for the info dschultz
I did see some posts elsewhere about folks getting the CH340 to work, but I have also seen plenty of posts saying it won’t work. Good to get it confirmed that the chipset is the problem and not me! So, seems like I should get a cable with a ‘FTDI FT232’ chip. Should it be the ‘BL’ or ‘RL’ version? I can currently see some RL versions available, but no BL ones.
Is the CH340 chipset also the reason that LTV won’t work?
Thanks again!

I'm pretty sure it the less common BL version you need.
LTV won;t work until your ROM is defined for editing.

Hi again,
I managed to get ECUFlash v1.28 to pull the ROM with the vag com cable with a CH340 chipset.
In case it is useful to others...
Setup: 1. Windows 10 64 bit 2. Ebay Vag Com cable with CH340 chipset 3. 2005 ADM Subaru Outback 2.5i MT
Steps: 1. Install CH340 chipset drivers for Windows 10 from the "WinChipHead" chinese website - cable now shows up under serial ports in Device Manager 2. Use Device Manager to set properties of the CH340 driver to COM1 or COM2. Leave settings unchanged (9600 baud etc) 3. Download and install* ECUFlash v1.28. If you have another version of ECUFlash installed make sure you 'uninstall' and then delete all the contents of the ECUFlash subfolder (I had previously installed the latest version 1.44). If you leave the subfolder there you will get xmlHandler errors when you try to run ECUFlash 4. ECUFlash install wizard pops up with an error about DPInst.exe needing to be 64 bit. Ignore this and proceed. 5. Run* ECUFlash and it works (for me at least)
* some info I found said to install and run as administrator. It didn't seem to make any difference in my case.
So far I have pulled the ROM (I haven't flashed anything yet). But, as I understand it, if you can successfully pull the ROM you should be able to flash it. I've put the ROM up in the ECU Definitions forum, which should hopefully allow me to access LTV.
If it is helpful to others, I also got FreeSSM running using the CH340 vag com chipset.
