hey guys i have a 2000 323i e46 i want to play with some tuning

im just wondering what do u need to use bootmode for
do u need to use it to tune/modify maps or can u still read / write that part without needing to ews delete / virginize ect
or does all that need to be done
and is boot mode required to firmware update
