Hi All,

I am trying to fix a problem with my Z3 but i'm afraid I need Romraider's help.

Car:
Z3 coupe with the 2.8 M52tub28 engine.

Engine upgrades:
M54b30 inlet camshaft
M54b30 inlet manifold
Supersprint headers + racecat + Eisenmann back box.
MS42 ECU and tuning by Be Racing (So far extremely helpful with their support!)

Issue:
VANOS will not work. ECU keeps throwing the vanos en CPS sensor codes:

DTC 103 - VANOS Error- Inlet Camshaft
DTC 65 - Camshaft position sensor (inlet ms43)

Important: I have retimed the engine and used a VANOS timing toolkit from BGS. Both engine timing and VANOS timing should be on point. All reference points are perfectly aligned. Also I have fitted a NEW FEBI inlet camshaft sensor and put new seals into the VANOS. So in order to keep oversight, lets assume these are in working order.

Diagnostics:
I ran a log with Romraiders. The logging works as I could get live reading on water temp, oil temp, etc.
HOWEVER (!) for ALL VANOS parameters it reads 0.00. Literally not one VANOS parameter is being read by Romraider. The Tuners have not experienced this problem before so I hope you guys here can help me.

Where to start looking to find the source of this problem? Would that be:
- ECU
- Wiring harness
- VANOS Solenoids

Any insight would be greatly appreciated :)

99.9% of the time if you're throwing a sensor code, it means you have a sensor problem.
BMW are renowned for not always liking non-OE sensors. Find another (genuine) sensor to put on and test.

I have done some measurements with a multimeter. I measured the voltage on the back of the wires that go into the plugs that go in the DME.

Pin 2 and Pin 5 = CPS sensors. They measure between 2.0v and 2.8v approx.
Pin 40 and Pin 41 = Vanos Solenoids. They measured a steady 9.8v.

I guess this means that the sensors and solenoids are in working order and that the signal gets to the DME fine too.

I still don't understand why:

1) I get DTC error VANOS 103 and DTC error 65 inlet CPS

but Romraider

2) Get's absolutely ZERO reading from the VANOS and the CPS sensors for both the inlet and the exhaust.

I'm baffled haha.
