After having our car (MY15 Outback 2.5) serviced, I noticed that the calibration ID of the ECU changed from EB5GA00E to EB4GA00E. To me, this indicates that my workshop flashed an OLDER version of the firmware to the ECU (!).

It sure sounds like it.
Did you pull a copy of the rom before taking it in for service ?
