My desktop can't connect to anything on the internet. I can ping anything I want, but can't open anything in a web browser or connect to any kind of servers. Can't connect to my router's web interface, either (but I can ping it). All the other computers on the network (including this one) are fine. I've rebooted, unplugged and plugged back in the router and cable modem. Disabled and reenabled my network card. Nothing.

What gives?

It's not resolving DNS. Drop to CMD and type "ipconfig /all" and post the results up here. Check the DNS settings if you aren't setup to go through DHCP for those values.

So it's working now? I would jump into the router and check the "Status" and grab the DNS numbers off there and manually enter them.

that was the first thing I did. then the hosts files - when those files get infected, they'll send IP requests to blank or unknown ip addresses.

I restored it to the pre-night's restore point and it worked fine. It must have been a MS auto update that caused it.
