Just looking to see what people have done gearbox wise

My wrx box is not going to last much longer. Ever since Iv upped the power it's making some funny noises.

I know most go for the sti 6speed but what else is there in terms of using my old one and keeping the price down?

Looking for ideas

Thanks

I recommend the 6MT. Not only is it a far superior gearbox (weight aside), if you couple it with a R180 LSD, it will completely transform the way the car handles.

The 5MT has issues at higher power (400+ wtq) due to flex. I grenaded a PPG helical syncro 5MT set around that level. With that said, they replaced it no questions asked (AndrewTech FTW), so If I had to do a 5MT again it would be a PPG box..

I was previously running just a td05 16g at 1 bar and everything else pretty much standard, done lots of quarter mIle runs with launches and the box held up fine.
I did get told there only good till about 350hp

Now with a 20g, front mount, bigger injectors and other bits and bobs running about 1.5 bar Iv only done a few hard runs and it's showing signs of failing already, I would not even want to chance a launch.

The best option and probaly easiest does seem to be the 6 speed box it will more than easy handle the power I'm looking for

I wouldn't even consider anything else.

I've seen people go both ways, but if you're talking about keeping cost down I would go with a 6MT. I can get a 6MT for around $2500 USD if I look for a while. If you get the right one you'll be able to just swap your transmission, shifter, rear driveshaft, and front axles. (06'-07' USDM STI 6MT).

You'll pay way more for a new PPG box, and you'll be left with a viscous center differential, and an open front differential.
The 6MT may be heavier, but it is a better transmission if we're talking about the features you get for the money.

My LGT has a 6MT from an 04 or 05 STI.

Rallispec swapped in the gears from an LGT Spec B (taller 6th, and more evenly spaced ratios), and replaced the synchros (04/05 had a reputation for wearing out prematurely). Also, as a bonus, I have the old 3rd gear and its synchro stack sitting on my desk at work - it is both an excellent paperweight and a great conversation piece. :)

Thanks

Time to start saving for a 6mt.

I know I need to change the rear diff from the same car but do I need to change the rear shafts and front axles as stated above?

I'm a 01/02 wrx and Im going to try get a 03/04 sti 6mt?

Cheers

I'm pretty sure NASIOC has a couple of how-to threads on 6MT swaps, I'd look there if I was in your situation.

I wrote a swap thread at LegacyGT.com but I don't think it will be very useful for you since you've got an Impreza:

If you can find a 6MT from an 06-07 STI you can keep your existing rear differential, and they have better syncro's, and 07' has better gearing (IMO).

I second this... great trans.. I love my 07!! btw, I think it's ONLY the 07 with the better gearing, I believe the 06 just has the upgraded syncho's and the correct final drive, but the old style gearing?
