Hey guys,
So, I have tuned 3 2006 WRX's in the last two days. Each one had the very same anomaly even though all three were modded differently.
One had a VF43, STi intercooler, TBE.
One had a VF39 and factory TMIC, TBE etc
One had a STi TMIC and exhaust.

All exhibited a weird dip at 4100rpm. It can be seen in this graph:

This graph has the vf43 and vf39 cars. Both at different boost levels and you still see the strange dip.


analysing my logs also showed a funky trend before that point that had timing jumping from 14 to 11 to 14 to 11. I found this weird because at that RPM and load, timing wasn't set to be anywhere near 14. It was like 8. Yet, I couldn't find where it was getting the bogus timing value from. You could certainly feel it when driving the cars. The whole car jerked on the dyno when it was going through these points.

Any insight?

Did you analyze the timing using AirBoy's spreadsheet?

Did you try zeroing out Timing Compensation B (Intake Temperature)?

I did not do either.
However, I did look at all the timing compensation tables. None of them were at a point where they would have this effect (based on IATs). Unless there is another timing compensation map that I missed. Regardless, air temp was high enough that the car should have been pulling timing, not adding 3 degrees.

The weird part is the 14 to 11 jump every other cell. I need to get my laptop synch'd with my desktop so I can just load up logs really easy.

I'm not "blaming" RomRaider. I very well could have messed something up. (However, I don't think it's very likely since I tune over 50 subarus a month and only the 06's have this issue). I always look at myself first to place blame when there is an issue. I spent a total of 12 hours on the dyno trying to work this out of the cars. I pretty much just had to add tons of fuel to the point that the car would take 14 degrees of timing at such a low rpm (starts around 2900 up to 4000) to smooth it out. Which isn't the best way to tune a car. You should have the programmed timing when you want it. I blame Subaru second. They probably wrote some weird s*** on these ecus. I wonder if there is something in the code that we could have missed.

I'll try it again.

The base timing alternate (coolant temp) and timing compensation b (intake temp) are usually responsible for the sometimes wacky timing on the 06 wrx. In some cases, you'll see sporadic negative feedback correction in this range which can result in sawtooth graph. Viewing it on Airboy's graph, it is much easier to visualize what is going on.

Sounds like you got it nailed right there.
Soooo..... I just looked at the map again. You are right. I was reading the map as if it was Celsius... and it's not. So it's adding 7 degrees of timing to my map? Son of a...

Told you I probably dicked it up.

oh, what about the 4100 dip with the lean spot?
any experience on that one?

Why would you care if it was in Protuner or not?

I didn't mean to imply that I was bugging them to update Protuner because you are right, it wouldn't matter to me now. I bugged them about the weird timing issue for the '06 WRX when I still had the AP last year, before I found RomRaider.

I kept in touch with Christian at Cobb (he knew that I had switched to RomRaider) and later when they did update the maps/software, he sent me an email about it, that's all.
