Sorry I was typing to fast - I meant E46 not E36.
I think that MS42 ECUs are interchangeable but you have to flash them with software for designed to run on exact hardware. Just check up to date BMW programming data - there are 3 different 0pa files marked as 5WK9037, 5WK90020 and 5WK90xxx which is mainly used. It seems older software versions (like 0110AD) might have even more different 0pa files and this is why you have to be careful when downgrading in bootmode.

EWSoff file (CA version) at my disposal also has that bug mentioned on previous page. submenu "code" in INPA (where vin and other data are shown) throws error. But except this everything works fine and all motor values are displayed correctly guess there's some issue with patch demanding revision. Maybe someone has ideas how to fix that?
