You'll have to post the ROM, or at least the ECU or CAL ID.

No, RR Logger (with KKL VAG-COM cable) or EcuFlash can query the ECU for the valid numbers.

I've got a vag cable and rom raider. My first hurdle was when I connected them together it ask for an ecu definition update of some sort. I wasn't sure where or what to do

So if you have that cable, make sure everything is setup similar to :
viewtopic.php?f=33&t=14542

Then when you open ecuflash, it will ask for a definition as you attempt to read the rom, you normally have the option to "inherit from", try several definitions to see if one looks right.
Either way ecuflash should show you some output when reading the rom and that should contain the ECUID. Paste the output here so we can take a look.

What happens when you try to inherit from the BH 3 litre R def?

No, use the VAG-COM with RR Logger and it will report the ECU ID once all connected and logging data from the ECU.
Make sure to use the latest Logger definition XML file with RR Logger.
