There is so much information about SSM2 and PIDs and extended PIDs that I'm having a difficult time finding the syntax for transmit format for a simple RPM. Using 01 0C make perfect sense. Adding 7E0 or 7E1 with length and mode also makes sense. Is there a resource here or elsewhere that can help explain this and how to then use extended PIDs? SSM2?
Excuse my newbie state.

Where are you entering these queries, what cable are you using?

I'm using a OBDLink MX+ and have been trying to read the CVT temp and pulley speeds without any success. I can see the CVT temp is other applications (OBDActive or CarBit) but not the pulley speeds.
Using ATSH 7E1 and then using 221017 (which is supposed to be the temp) results in NO DATA or 7F 22 31
The standards documents state the ECU can be part of the Tx but I cannot get work. I feel like I have the wrong standard and PID. Working with 0105 is for my learning and getting familiar with what works and is known. - so I have a something to go back to when the adventure gets weird. I'm thinking there some SSM2 review needed.
Tx: atdp Rx: AUTO, ISO 15765-4 (CAN 11/500)
Thank you.

So what you are using is a cable with an ELM chip in it. Best to check the ELM documents about how to init and send requests to the ECU. Your FSM should provide you the info about what PIDs are supported, usually in the section about diagnostics with the factory SSM tool.
