Hi all,

I'm new to the forum and still learning the ropes when it comes to Subaru open-source tuning—I’d say my knowledge is limited to “little to none.”

I recently picked up a 2013 STI that's running a straight-pipe exhaust, and to be honest, the car runs like crap. So, I figured I’d try something a little outside the box: tune the car using ChatGPT and DeepSeek AI. My plan is to have AI review my logs and suggest corrections.

What do you all think about this idea?

I’ve already started scaling the MAF, and so far, I’m seeing great results with A/F Correction and A/F Learning at idle—both are sitting at 0%, which is promising. I’ll share my base map and idle log soon. I also did a WOT pull in 4th gear and will post that log later today.

What the AI says about my log:
Peak boost hits ~22.78 psi

WGDC Max: only 29%

Significant boost taper at high RPM

AFR leans out at high RPM — this lean condition is concerning and should be addressed immediately

IDC is at 100% (on stock STI injectors)

Note: AFR swings wildly from -18 to +20, which seems to be a major issue right now.

AI-Suggested Solutions:
Use lower WGDC values across the board

Allow for more boost taper toward redline

Be more conservative with spool-up and overboost control

Enrich the Open Loop Fueling Table (from 6400 RPM at 2.2 g/rev and above)

So my question is—how far off is the AI from reality?
Should I keep experimenting and learning, or would I be better off leaving this to a professional tuner?

I’m genuinely enjoying the learning process and feeling pretty motivated to keep going, but I also don’t want to ruin the car in the process.

Thanks in advance for your feedback!
If anyone has time to review my base map and WOT log later, I’d really appreciate the help!

the problem with AI tuning is its only going to be as good as the scenario you're feeding it with. So if you ask the wrong questions you'll get the wrong answers :)

Have you checked the car for boost/vac leaks and also checked the plugs out whilst doing a compression/leakdown check? The 2013 will be 2.5 (unless its a JDM 2013 sti?) so most common issue i see is parts fitted + no tune = bad engine.

In terms of how the AI has reviewed your logs, who can comment here as the only one who's seen your logs is you and the AI? If you post up a log+LTV info and your current tune then someone can have a looky at it.

A big aspect of tuning as I have understood, is to feel how the car behaves. Unfortunately that's one thing AI will not be able to do. Also you will need to build a database from which the AI can take information from.
With this said, I don't think it's a bad idea to use the help of AI. I've acutally done it myself. After reading the Subie newbie tuning guide and Cobb tuning guide I uploaded them to chatgpt. Whenever I have questions I just ask chatgpt instead of trying to find the page with relevant info.
