Does anyone have experience with this kind of cam signal?
On the logs my cam position is either around 23 deg, or 94 deg. 94 is not possible in my opinion. Both sensors are new, Hella ones, and vanos is working as it should (based on the feel, and the load values). On the logs i couldn't find anything related to the high or low values, both seem to be random.
I swapped the sensors because the cables on the old ones were broken. With the old cam sensor the vanos did not work, and now it does. So i tought i fixed it, but maybe didnt.
The question is if i can do something about it or just try swapping sensors? My problem is that i cant tune the fuel map, bc i have around 6 deg knock retard from 2 to 3000 rpm, when throttle is applied fast. I can put more ipw in the area but then the ecu pulls it because of the o2 sensors. I think the base vanos correction map makes it weird. Im going to try it with them zeroed out to verify.
Engine is a rebuilt m52b25 with b28 crank and rods, still b25 pistons (0.8mm higher, bit more compression), s52 intake and stock m52 exhaust cam (bought as set of s52 cams..), and m50 intake manifold. Car was originally a 320i, so i have the same ecu, but copied all the tables from the 328i bin i found here.
Situation is a bit sketchy, lot of variables, but i think it is possible to make it run without bogging, even if it could have more power.
Attached a log, and the distribution of Vanos KW values. (chatgpt helped a lot with that)

318 with M52 swap here. Do you have an aftermarket flywheel/clutch setup? I had similar problems with my aftermarket cam position sensor, but once I replaced with OE I got my vanos back. The car was always reading bad knock even though I'm positive it was not. I determined it was due to either aftermarket knock sensors or the single mass flywheel, probably both.
I changed the knock correction tables to 0's at all times, and the car obviously stopped pulling timing and I gained lots of power. I'm not recommending it for everyone, but if you are mostly stock timing + using quality fuel these engines don't knock in my experience.

I forgot to mention that i have an M20 single mass flywheel and clutch. It may cause some false knock. If the car would run fine then i would consider tweaking the knock detection.
What i found out that the 95 deg camshaft position is most likely -5. It looks like the advanced position is around 23 deg. And after the vanos switches off it decreases to 0 and then continues from 99 to 95.
As i assembled the engine, i intentionally retarded the intake cam, because i wasnt sure about the piston to valve clearance and i installed new hydraulic lifters too.
It didnt look like this much of retard, i just wanted about 8 degrees. I may readjust it later, but first i want to try it with zeroed out fuel and ignition vanos correction maps. I hope the hesitation will disappear then.
