I got a weird error message trying to install RomRaider on my Vista x64 PC. (see attachment)

The setup quits with the message that Java Runtime 1.5 is needed for installation. I got JDK 1.6 installed in 64 bit (Program Files) and if I am right JRE 1.6 installed in 32-bit (Program Files (x86)).

Is this a known problem or is there a known workaround for this issue?

The 64-bit versions of Windows are a bit weird. The "Program Files (x86)" directory name causes problems in a command shell. Try this:

1) Open a command prompt
2) Run the command

Code:
java -version

and see what you get.

If it bombs out in some way, such as something being "unexpected at this time" then that's probably it. The parentheses in the path name don't work in their own command shell. How Microsoft let that by I don't know. It's pretty braindead. If this is the problem, you'll need to edit the Path environment variable to replace all instances of "Program Files (x86)" to "progra~2".

You'll want to verify that this is the correct value first, by running the following at that command prompt:

Code:
dir /x c:\

and find the right value for that directory.

If instead, you get

Code:
'java' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

then you need to add the bin directory of your JRE to the path.

If you still can't get it to work, I'll try it on one of the test machines at work and see what I can work out.

It'll be a bit before I can do any 64-bit testing (work is pretty busy), so I'd suggest trying changing the Path environment variable as I described above. It can't do any harm, i.e. it won't affect anything at all, and might fix it. It's easy, so worth a try. If it doesn't work, I'll see if I can get some time over the next few days to try this on a 64-bit machine.

Hi, sorry for delay in answering, but I have been busy and haven't time to try a bit around. ;)

Actually changing the path to the java/bin directory didn't improve anything. Actually java isn't found at all.

Tried to use C:\Program Files (x86)\java\bin and also as you suggested C:\progra~2\java\bin. On both tests the java.exe isn't found at all. (I did a restart after changing the path-variable - so that can't be the problem).

Will just switch back to the original path-entry to the 64-bit Java Version.

It's not that urgent (got a 32bit XP laptop with which I do all the logging and flashing), but if you find something it would be great. ;)

thanks yours renew

I'll give it a try when I get a chance. I've got Vista64 and XP64 machines in the test lab at work, but need to wait until the current crunch is past. We're in the final days before another release, so I can't really preempt machines for private projects. I will see if I can figure this out though. Java is part of our test harness, and the 64-bit flavors of Windows have proven troublesome in the past. The parentheses fix has usually done the trick, so perhaps there's something new awaiting us.

forget what I've wrote. ;)

Doesn't make sense changing the "Program Files"-part to a different folder name (e.g. with parentheses) if the folder in /java/ is named differently (in 64-bit its the JDK, in 32 just the JRE).
I'll "fix" that and come back to you.

As I said I fixed the little path-issue and now the 32bit JRE is the default JVM. java -version is just working fine - displaying the JRE now. (I use the "version" with the parentheses right now...)

But the installer doesn't start either. So if you got time to take a look at it, just let me know. ;) Or if there is something in your mind I could try let me know - I am a developer too but haven't done anything in java on a 64bit Windows pc. ;)

thanks, yours renew
