For grins I tried running Learning View against my wife's new Legacy. It is a 2011 2.5i Premium.

I know I need a 2.0 cable to read and write the ROM, but I'm more interested in basic diagnosis for this car than I am in tuning it. Or so I thought.

When I try to connect I get this error:

Quote:

ECU ID of 7512167007 not found. Your ECU is not currently supported.

Rats. Well it was worth a shot. Then it prompted me to pull the IAM anyway. Sure, why not?

Quote:
IAM = 0.6875

I am assuming the number I'm wanting is closer to 1.0. If so this is looking pretty bad. The car is BONE stock.

We were told when we signed the lease papers that regular gas is fine. I am considering resetting the ECU by disconnecting the battery and trying a tank of premium. I really hope it's not a mechanical issue.

Any other thoughts or ideas?

It is actually common for IAM on stock cars to be less than 1.0

Thanks for the reply. Does that mean it's nothing to worry about?

I just want it running optimally. With the IAM where it's at, I'm assuming it's been seeing knock and adjusting for it.

I pulled the battery cable and the IAM reset to 0.5. It's got a full tank of premium so we'll see if it likes that any better.

I also just got a new Tactrix so I will hopefully be posting the rom soon.

To get your IAM's to 1.0, get in 2nd or third at 2k rpms and then get on the throttle just enough to hold boost at 0 psi, all the way up to 6k rpms or so. Make sure the car is at op. temp.

There is no turbo on the 2.5i

Well she burned through a tank of premium and I looked at the IAM again.

Exact same, 0.6875.

So the question remains, should I trust the IAM reading?

It changed with the reset but I can't believe it ended up the exact same with better gas. Would it be capped?

Yeah that is probably right. ALL NA cars have a IAM around there stock. You generally have to pull timing out to run somewhat knock free and get the IAM up to 1.

If you really want to know add a gallon of toluene in the tank and see if the IAM goes up to one.

I can only speak from personal experience, but from extensive logging on my 09 2.5i Impreza, IAM always runs at 1.0, anything less and something is wrong, or i've recently reset it and the ECU is still learning.

Post reset, starting from 0.5, IAM increases to 0.8## rapidly with general driving, and up to 1.0 after a pull or 2 though the whole rev range.
This was both when stock and now modified.

I would do some more diagnosis, maybe connect an OBD-II reader to see if there are any pending CELs....
