So apparently not only does the hardware support usb host, but it works out of the box in webos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mV0ElV0- ... r_embedded

Does logging require any type of power? Because that is the only limitation with usb host, you have to provide external power.

You will need to provide power to the USB device, i.e.: the cable. The Openport2 uses this power to allow access to the SD card. I'm not sure if the processor in the OP2 is active or no without car power.
A VAG-COM or similar (FTDI based) cable needs power too.

Power shouldnt be too big of a problem. I would just run one end of a Y cable to a cig lighter usb charger.

Romraider is running in ubuntu chroot. However, I added the ecu defs and tried opening a rom and it didnt go so well. It takes about 5-10 minutes to open the rom for some reason, and when it finally finishes opening it, I do not see any tables. Any ideas?

I suspect this may be due to Java. I see similar problems with OpenJDK on Linux. Can you get the Java version being used?
The length of time may be due to memory allotted to Java or maybe non-optimized version of Java. I see a similarly long time when opening a ROM on my phone.

Yea I just checked synaptic and it is using openjdk-6-jre. Any ideas?

No, I haven't looked into it hard enough yet.
For me on Linux I remove OpenJDK and install a Sun Java release.

Any further developments in this project? I'm interested in possibly doing this myself.

Possibly. Romraider rc10 release notes state "Fixed the missing Table Tree problem when running RomRaider on systems using IcedTea or OpenJDK JVM."

I am hoping this will resolve my issues with opening roms.

Woohoo, I updated to RC10 and I am able to view the rom contents now. It still took about 5 minutes to open the rom. I will try to order a micro usb adapter soon and see if logging works.

Nice job dschultz.

Does the Logger open up right now, how long does that take?

The logger took about 4 seconds to show me ecu defs not found (because i hadnt added them yet) so it seems normal.

Anything based on the ELM chip will not pass SSM packets transparently, so the first option is out (I have one of these so I know first hand).

The Innovate OT-2, I suspect not based on this quote in the user manual:
"The unit is capable of reading up to 16 channels of “OBD-II” (“On Board Diagnostic)"
To me that means generic ODB packet data compatible with any ECU.

I think the PLX is just like the OT-2 above.

I am having a little more luck with my latest adventure with my galaxy nexus and ubuntu. I was able to open a rom and view tables with ease, etc... However, my main goal with this is to log. I launched the logger fine but when I add logger defs, it immediately prompts me to add logger defs again, and I cannot get the ecu to be recognized.

The first screenshot is after launching romraider through terminal, just before it pops up I see some WARN's.

This next screenshot is a 'dmesg | grep -i usb' after plugging in my tactrix cable.

The dmesg gives me hope. Anyone have any ideas?

Change to the directory where RomRaider lives, then launch it. All support libs and config files are relative to the RomRaider application directory. Set your JAVA_HOME environment variable to were Java lives and then use ./run.sh to launch RomRaider. Should be no need for sudo.

It looks like the OS recognized the USB device and installed default driver usbserial and ftdi_sio. You can see that with lsmod. Now the problem is RXTX. There's no version for your OS in the RomRaider distribution. You may have to replace it with this Jar and this native library.
We don't yet support speaking to the FTDI chip directly. Hopefully the two files I listed will help.

Changing to the rr dir stopped the WARN's and didnt continue to ask for the logger defs. It also showed parameters and displayed "Connecting" at the top. However it still didnt show a com port, connect, etc...

I see where I put the files in the RomRaider directory. Do I need to rename the jar or anything?

Try renaming the RXTX Jar to that of the original Jar file.

Also, make sure your user has permission to use the serial port. Put your user ID in the same group as the serial port group uses. Remember to log out and back in to apply the permissions and make sure they stick.
Until you get a COM port in the list box you're not going to connect to anything.
